The Miami Heat are quickly becoming one of the most serious teams connected to the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, and new reporting suggests the groundwork for a potential blockbuster could already be taking shape ahead of the NBA Draft.
In a recent Miami Herald mailbag, Heat reporter Anthony Chiang detailed how a trade between Miami and the Milwaukee Bucks could realistically come together, including how draft-pick rules would affect the timeline of any deal involving Giannis Antetokounmpo. According to Chiang, the Heat and Bucks are already eligible to discuss trades because both teams have completed their seasons.
The key complication is Miami’s 2026 first-round pick, which currently sits at No. 13 overall. Because of NBA rules tied to previous draft obligations, the Heat cannot officially trade that selection outright before the June 23-24 draft. However, Chiang explained that Miami could still make the pick “on behalf of another team” as part of a prearranged agreement.
“This means the Heat and Bucks could agree to a trade prior to next month’s draft,” Chiang wrote, “but it can’t be finalized and made official until after the draft if the deal involves Miami’s first-round selection.”
The report adds another layer to what has already become one of the NBA’s biggest offseason storylines. Earlier this week, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Milwaukee Bucks are actively listening to trade offers for Giannis Antetokounmpo after another disappointing season ended without a playoff appearance. Milwaukee is expected to seek a combination of “young blue-chip talent and/or a surplus of draft picks” in return.
Miami is far from alone in the chase. The Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers have all reportedly explored Giannis scenarios over the past several months. But Chiang noted that Miami is expected to be “among the most aggressive teams in the Giannis sweepstakes this offseason.”
One factor that could significantly impact negotiations is Antetokounmpo himself. Chiang pointed out that Giannis has leverage due to his contract structure and his long-term extension eligibility. “One thing that would definitely help the Heat’s chances at landing Giannis is him naming Miami as his preferred trade destination,” Chiang wrote.
The Heat are reportedly capable of offering three first-round picks and multiple pick swaps in a potential package. Meanwhile, Milwaukee’s front office is still weighing multiple possibilities, including trying to convince Antetokounmpo to stay after a turbulent 32-50 season that included injuries, coaching changes, and growing frustration between the player and the organization.
