Former NBA forward Christian Wood says a recent attempted break-in at his California rental home was not a random crime, but a targeted attack that he believes was connected to his ex-girlfriend, Yasmine Lopez.

The incident in question occurred on November 5, when Wood was alone in a short-term rental in Sherman Oaks. Investigators previously stated that a Domino’s pizza delivery was sent to the home earlier that day, a move police believe was used to see whether anyone would answer the door. Wood did not respond, as he was not expecting food.

Not long after the delivery attempt, Wood says three masked men tried to force their way into the residence by breaking a sliding glass door at the rear of the home.

In a sworn declaration, the 30-year-old athlete said he feared for his life and retrieved a firearm he keeps secured inside the home. He discharged the weapon toward the floor in what he described as an effort to scare the intruders away. The men fled, nothing was taken, and no injuries were reported.

In court documents filed on November 19 and obtained by Us Weekly on December 31, Wood claimed the timing and circumstances of the attempted break-in raised serious concerns. He noted that no similar incidents had been reported within a 10-mile radius and emphasized that the encounter occurred during daylight hours, when he believes someone knew he would be home.

“The only reasonable conclusion is that they were there to kill me,” Wood stated in his filing, adding that he “genuinely believed” he was going to die during the encounter.

Wood went on to allege that Lopez, with whom he shares a 2-year-old son named Kobe, may have had knowledge of the incident before it occurred. He cited what he described as unusual behavior surrounding visitation in the days leading up to November 5, including a last-minute change involving their child the day before the attempted break-in.

He also referenced a social media post Lopez allegedly shared roughly an hour before the incident, writing that it featured “a violent King Von song with a gun emoji.” According to Wood, the lyrics referenced “a murder for hire and retaliation killing,” which he described as deeply disturbing given the timing.

“These threats were not isolated or emotional outbursts,” Wood wrote, alleging a pattern of hostility and intimidation. He further claimed that Lopez had previously broken into and vandalized his home in August 2023 and that he has since hired armed security for protection.

The court granted Wood a temporary restraining order and awarded him temporary sole custody of Kobe. Lopez has denied all allegations, stating in her own filings that she had no involvement in the incident and learned about it only after it happened.

A hearing to address both sides’ claims is scheduled for January 14.
