Professional basketball player DeAndre Kane is facing legal trouble back home after authorities arrested him at Pittsburgh International Airport on allegations that he owes more than $100,000 in unpaid child support.
The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office told CBS News that Kane, 36, was taken into custody on Friday, May 29, shortly after arriving on a flight from Iceland, where he currently lives and plays professionally. Investigators said Kane had been wanted since 2023 after failing to appear in family court for a hearing connected to missed child support payments. Authorities coordinated with the Allegheny County Police Department and the U.S. Department of State after learning he would be returning to Pennsylvania from Iceland.
The arrest marks a dramatic turn for the Pittsburgh native, who has spent more than a decade building a basketball career overseas. Kane first made a name for himself as a standout at Schenley High School before playing college basketball at Marshall University and later at Iowa State University.
After going undrafted in 2014, he carved out a lengthy professional career across Europe, competing in countries including Russia, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Serbia, Israel, and Iceland.
Most recently, Kane was playing for Grindavík in Iceland's top basketball league, where he helped lead the club to a championship earlier this month. The veteran guard has also enjoyed success internationally, winning multiple league titles in Israel and competing in high-level European tournaments.
Authorities said detectives traveled to the airport after confirming Kane's arrival plans. Once his flight landed, sheriff's deputies and county police officers moved in and arrested him without incident. The sheriff's office said the outstanding matter stemmed from years of unresolved child support obligations and a missed court appearance dating back to 2023.
While the laws on child support enforcement vary from state to state, most cases involving unpaid child support can lead to civil enforcement actions, including arrest warrants, when court orders are ignored. In Pennsylvania, family courts have broad authority to enforce support obligations against individuals who fail to comply.
Kane is currently being held at the Allegheny County Jail while he awaits a hearing in family court.
