The Dallas Cowboys made a significant roster move, announcing the release of cornerback Trevon Diggs with just one game remaining in the regular season.

Diggs, 27, was waived on December 30 and will be subject to the NFL’s 24-hour waiver process before becoming a free agent if he goes unclaimed.

According to a source who spoke with ESPN, the decision stemmed from “a culmination of events, including performance.” The move comes less than two years after the Cowboys signed Diggs to a five-year, $97 million contract extension.

Diggs’ release follows a turbulent stretch for both the player and the team. Back in October, he had entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after suffering what the organization described as an at-home accident.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Diggs reported concussion symptoms when he arrived at team facilities and was immediately evaluated by doctors.

“He’s been checked out by our doctors. He’s in the protocol and will miss the game,” Schottenheimer said at the time, adding that the priority was Diggs’ well-being.

The injury sidelined Diggs for Dallas’ Week 7 matchup against the Washington Commanders and further strained a defense that has struggled throughout the season.

Entering the final week, the Cowboys rank near the bottom of the league in yards allowed and passing defense, issues that persisted even when Diggs was active.

Injuries have defined much of Diggs’ recent tenure in Dallas. After earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 and a second Pro Bowl nod in 2022, he was limited to just two appearances in 2023 and missed six games last season.

This year, Diggs had yet to record an interception or a pass defended, a sharp contrast to the ball production that once made him a centerpiece of the Cowboys’ secondary.

The timing of Diggs' release coincided with off-field developments involving his older brother, Stefon Diggs. Earlier on December 30, Stefon was accused of assaulting a woman who previously worked for him. The alleged incident occurred on December 2 at his Massachusetts home.

There is no indication that the Cowboys’ decision regarding Trevon is connected to the allegations against his brother. Stefon’s attorney, David Meier, said his client “categorically denies the allegations,” calling them “unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and never investigated — because they did not occur.”
