Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden was relieved of his role on Monday.
The news of Gruden's termination follows the team's 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots. The Redskins released a statement regarding the situation, and will hold a press conference later Monday.
"Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility," the team said in a statement. "Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond."
The Redskins have had their worst start to a season since 2005. Gruden joined the team in 2014. When asked about the security of his job following the Sunday loss to the Patriots, Gruden said, "I don't have a concern. I'll just wait and see."
He is under contract through the 2020 season as he signed a two-year extension in Mar. 2017.
Over the past week, a video that appeared to show Gruden smoking weed and talking to a younger woman surfaced online. There was no indication of where the clip came from, but it also wasn't clear if the man actually was Gruden. When reached for comment at the time, the Redskins declined.
