Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon has let his team know that he will not report to training camp and will demand a trade if he doesn't receive a new contract. As ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, Gordon's agent, Fletcher Smith, announced the news Thursday morning.
Negotiations for a new contract for Gordon have reportedly been slow this offseason, which prompted him and his agent to make the move they did. He's currently scheduled to head into the last year of a five-year contract worth $5.6 million, but it's clear he believes that he's worth a lot more than that. A good chunk of the best running backs in the league have recently received new deals, including Todd Gurley and Le'Veon Bell.
If Gordon does not receive an offer from the Chargers that matches that of other top running backs, he will request a trade. Many chimed in on Twitter to say they agreed with Gordon. When considering his past achievements for the team and his impressive stats, numerous fans said he was underpaid for his contributions to the Chargers. However, his past injuries were also brought up, too.
