On Aug. 9, the 24-year-old was sentenced and issued an apology to the family of Tina Tintor, who died when Ruggs crashed his Chevrolet Corvette into her Toyota Rav4 on Nov. 2, 2021. She and her golden retriever dog Max died at the scene. His blood-alcohol level was 0.16, twice the legal limit, at the time of the crash.
"To the parents and family of Ms. Tintor, I sincerely apologize for the pain and suffering my actions the morning of Nov. 2, 2021 have caused you, your family and those who knew Ms. Tina and Max," Ruggs said in court on Wednesday, per TMZ. "I let my family, my teammates and those who believed in me down with my actions and hurt so many." He said there was "no excuse" for his actions. He will be eligible for parole after spending three years behind bars.
Ruggs was hit with five charges, including four felonies and one misdemeanor, in connection with the crash. If he was convicted on all counts, he was looking at over 50 years in prison. However, he reached a plea deal with prosecutors in May. He pleaded guilty to one count of DUI resulting in death and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter. The rest of the charges against him were dropped.
The former wide receiver was drafted by the Raiders in the 2020 NFL Draft. His second season with the team was cut short following the fatal crash. He was released from the team shortly after.
