Canelo Álvarez Doesn't Care Jay-Z Lost $250,000 Betting Against Him

He also conceded that it feels good to prove people wrong when they bet against him.

In an interview with Speedy Morman for Complex, Mexican boxer Canelo Álvarez was asked about the time Jay-Z bet against him in his fight against Miguel Cotto, which resulted in thousands of dollars in losses.

At around the 9:40 point of the interview, which can be seen above, Álvarez was asked if it feels good when people bet against him and lose money. "Yeah, because you know show them who's the best," he said. "When people talk about lot, or bad against you, or talk shit about you and everything... The most satisfaction you need to have is like that. Show them you're the best."

Morman then brought up when Jay-Z bet $250,000 on Miguel Cotto winning their fight in November 2015, which Álvarez ultimately won by unanimous decision. "Yeah, he lose," Álvarez smiled. "Bad bet." Morman asked how it feels to specifically make Jay-Z lose money, he replied, "I don't care if he's Jay-Z, or whatever. I don't give a fuck."

Considering Jay-Z has a net worth of approximately $2.5 billion as of 2025, it's unlikely that the music mogul and businessman cares much about the loss, either. Álvarez was the favorite to win the fight, which makes sense because in his career he's won the majority of his bouts. At this point, he's fought 67 fights in total, 63 of which he's won, and 39 of those were by knockout. Two of the times he didn't win were losses, while the other two were draws.
