To be in Seattle is to be constantly aggrieved. The richest man in the world started his company there and he dangles maybe, possibly helping the people that live there like carrots on sticks. The football team made the decision to throw on the 1-yard line in the biggest game in franchise history. And the basketball team snuck away in the night for a fourth-tier city in the middle of nowhere.
But for one brief, glorious moment last night, Kevin Durant made Seattle feel appreciated. The superstar came out wearing an old-school Shawn Kemp jersey before a preseason matchup between the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings. KD, who played his rookie season for the SuperSonics before they relocated to OKC to become the Thunder, told the crowd that he hopes basketball will be a permanent fixture in Seattle again soon.
"NBA is back in Seattle for tonight, but hopefully it's back forever soon," he told the crowd.
Durant also wore a special Sonics colorway of his own sneakers throughout the game. He also made sure to give the crowd a taste of what they were missing, scoring 26 points. The Warriors walked away with this game in a 122-94 beatdown of their upstate rivals. Long-suffering Sonics fans can check out KD's speech up top.
