LeBron James’ legal team allegedly sent cease-and-desist letters to creators of AI-generated videos using his likeness.
According to 404 Media, the creators of Interlink AI, an AI tool and Discord community that allowed users to generate videos of NBA stars, received a cease-and-desist letter from attorneys representing James.
Jason Stacks, founder of the AI generation platform FlickUp that hosts Interlink, confirmed that he received a letter from James’ attorney a “couple of weeks ago.”
“Within 30 minutes of receiving the cease and desist, we made the decision to remove all realistic people from Interlink AI's software,” Stacks told 404 Media, confirming the letter came from the law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. “Generative AI is the ‘wild west’ when it comes to copyright & IP, but we're committed to being on the right side of that change.”
Some of the “brainrot” videos on Instagram, reportedly created with Interlink AI, featured James in various absurd scenarios: as a pregnant man, as a mermaid, and another in a compromising situation with Diddy and Stephen Curry.
The Discord channel also supposedly celebrated when 50 Cent liked the video featuring LeBron, Diddy, and Curry, which had reached roughly 6.2 million views.
Interlink also reportedly released AI models based on high-profile athletes and celebrities such as Elon Musk, Drake, and Ye (formerly known as Kanye West). Its moderators later told the Discord community they removed all “realistic people models” due to legal threats.
Instagram has since deleted at least three accounts that were involved in distributing nonconsensual AI content of James.
Meta did not provide comment to 404 Media when asked if they received a legal notice from James’ team.
