Anyone who has ever picked up a ball, swung a bat, or stepped into the ring, knows that injuries are a part of the game. It’s a cliché that’s about as old as the games themselves. However, just because injuries are a given, doesn’t mean they’re easy to swallow or stomach, by any means. If you’ve ever heard the break of an ankle, or the even more horrifying screams that accompany such an injury, then you already have an idea of the lows that can come with competing at the highest level. Whether an injury takes away a source of income, or shatters a dream of playing professionally, one thing is for certain, it is one of the most graphic things a fan can witness. So, if you’re in the mood to really get spooked out this Halloween, check out this, Gallery: The Most Gruesome Sports Injury Photos Part II.

25. Jason Kendall
Year: 1999
Sport: Baseball
This terrible injury to long-time Pirate, Jason Kendall, was sustained while he was trying to beat out a bunt to first base. Kendall dislocated his ankle, and pretty much tore every ligament in the process.
24. Marc Mariani
Year: 2012
Sport: Football
First off, it really sucks that this happened in a preseason game in which nobody is supposed to care about anything. The second point worth making is that Mariani is holding his broken leg with one hand, and still holding onto the ball with the other. That's dedication.
23. Renzo Gracie
Year: 2000
Sport: MMA
The coolest part about Gracie getting his arm broken during this Pride fight has to be the look on his face. He either doesn't care what's happening to him, or is in too much pain to register that his arm is being bent in ways it was never meant to. We'll leave it up to you to decide.
22. Sid Vicious
Year: 2001
Sport: Wrestling
Who says wrestling is fake? We're sure the legendary Sid Vicious would very much like to debate that assertion with anyone who is willing. Sid broke his tibia and fibula when he landed wrong after attempting to pull off a very challenging move back in 2001. He would return to the ring in 2004.
21. Ryan Powdrell
Year: 2006
Sport: NCAA Football
You can just feel Powdrell's torment on this vicious tag-team hit inflicted by two Nebraska defenders. The former Trojan's ankle was left dislocated and broken, having bent 90 degrees the wrong way, and his football career was most definitely over.
20. Tim Hudson
Year: 2013
Sport: Baseball
They say pitchers are terrible athletes, and Tim Hudson didn't do any favors to dispel that theory with this attempt at covering first base. His leg on the bag reminds us of the old damsel in distress tied up across the train tracks, and both end in disaster. The fact that the score was already 6-0 at the time couldn't have made anyone feel better.
19. Jaymie Graham
Year: 2011
Sport: Aussie Rules Football
In case you didn't already know, Aussie Rules Football is one of the most dangerous things a human being can engage in. This tackle on Graham was absolutely bone shattering. ACL done, kneecap relocated, and a certain trip to the hospital.
18. Willis McGahee
Year: 2003
Sport: NCAA Football
We're sure Willis will not want to relive this horrific moment from the 2003 Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State anytime soon. This is the injury that makes everyone wonder just how good Willis McGahee could've been at the NFL level. One big hit and a dude's career is changed forever. At least he's been able to carve out a solid pro career.
17. E.J. Henderson
Year: 2009
Sport: Football
We've heard of running backs breaking ankles, but this is just ridiculous. Henderson did indeed snap his femur while attempting to tackle Tim Hightower of the Cardinals. Henderson was carted off the field, and the Vikings lost 30-17. Talk about a rough day at the office.
16. Richard Zednik
Year: 2008
Sport: Hockey
What makes this one even worse is that it was a teammate who sliced open Zednik's carotid artery with his skate. Zednik managed to get off the ice to safety, while leaving a bloody trail behind him, and an entire stadium holding their collective breaths.
15. Preston Burpo
Year: 2010
Sport: Soccer
What is it with soccer players and broken legs? Here a goalie gets in on the action, as Preston Burpo's nasty collision with an opposing player leaves the Revolution man down for the count.
14. Jaehyouk Sa
Year: 2012
Sport: Weightlifting
When you're a professional weightlifter, it would seem that a certain amount of risk accompanies that career choice. We do feel bad though, as Sa's elbow couldn't have felt too good after it bent back so awkwardly.
13. Steve Zakuani
Year: 2011
Sport: Soccer
Yes, a red card was produced to Colorado's Brian Mullan as a direct result of this horror tackle on Seattle Sounder, Steve Zakuani. Obviously, this one cost Zakuani the rest of his 2011 season.
12. Derrick Roland
Year: 2009
Sport: NCAA Basketball
A leg just shouldn't bend that way. Rolland snapped his tibia and fibula on this play when he fell awkwardly after going up for a layup. His career as a Texas A&M Aggie sadly came to a close as a result.
11. Aaron Ramsey
Year: 2010
Sport: Soccer
This leg break was the result of a nasty tackle from Stoke's Ryan Shawcross. In case you have any doubts over the severity of this injury, just take a look at the faces of Ramsey's Arsenal teammates, and the concern of Dean Whitehead who's on the other team.
10. Rashad Johnson
Year: 2013
Sport: Football
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Rashad Johnson for showing off his finger, or lack there of, on Twitter. How does this even happen when you're the dude making the tackle? We know players, especially NFL players, are all about putting themselves on the line for their team, but this really is taking it to a whole new level.
9. Marcin Wasilewski
Year: 2009
Sport: Soccer
Even Axel Witsel, the dude who just crushed Wasilewski's leg, has a look of horror on his face from this one. He must know right away that he's stepped down on flesh and not turf. When your foot and shin get twisted into a U shape, it's never a good thing.
8. Roy Jones Jr.
Year: 2008
Sport: Boxing
The Roy Jones Jr. of the late 2000s is a perfect example of how Father Time waits for no boxer. He was the fighter of the decade in the '90s because of his speed and power. By the time he met up with Joe Calzaghe in a battle for the light heavyweight title he had lost three of his last six bouts and was well past his prime. Calzaghe opened up this nasty gash over Jones's left eye on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Five years later and Jones has yet to retire. SMH. Give it up, fam.
7. Marcus Lattimore
Year: 2012
Sport: NCAA Football
Before the start of the 2012 season, Marcus Lattimore was being hyped up to have a Heisman-esque type season with South Carolina. Unfortunately, that dream came to a halt during this home game against SEC rivals, Tennessee. In case you couldn't tell by looking, Lattimore tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL during this moment of horror. The look on his face says it all.
6. Corey Hill
Year: 2008
Sport: MMA
Isn't it the other dude who's supposed to get hurt when you're looking to nail him with a leg kick? We swear this one isn't photo-shopped, but we really didn't think a leg could bend like that. Don't give us the, "MMA is supposed to be a dangerous sport" excuse, this is not what people have in mind when they make that claim.
5. Oupa Ngulube
Year: 2009
Sport: Soccer
Chalk this one up to another one of these 50/50 challenges that ended up as a 100 percent disaster. Oupa Ngulube couldn't have seen this one coming during a South African football league match. You can actually hear the scream after the impact. Yikes!
4. Morgan Miller
Year: 2012
Sport: Volleyball
First Bode Miller skis drunk down a mountain and endangers his own life. Now, he's nailing his wife in the face with a golf ball by accident. We know she's a volleyball player, Bode, but she's probably used to a slightly bigger ball coming her way. This is a nasty one.
3. Darryl Boyce
Year: 2011
Sport: Hockey
Hockey players really are lunatics. It takes one sort of sick and twisted individual to compete in a sport that would result in such injuries, it takes another to Tweet about it like it's something to be proud of. We're just going to assume that the Maple Leafs rookie wasn't exactly thinking clearly. You know, because of the loss of blood and what not.
2. Kevin Ware
Year: 2013
Sport: NCAA Basketball
Most of us remember this horrific scene from last year's Elite Eight matchup between Duke and Louisville. Ware was running out to defend a Duke shot, when he landed awkwardly and broke his leg in two places. The bone, as we can see here, was quite visibly sticking out of the Louisville guard's leg. What you may not remember is Ware telling his teammates that he would be fine, and they should go and win the game. Can you say, soldier?
1. Craig Peacock
Year: 2012
Sport: Hockey
Leave it to a dude who plays hockey in England to get a nasty cut like this to the face. Peacock, who plays for the Belfast Giants, took a skate to the face while playing in a league game. He then went on to tweet a picture of the horrific gaping hole above his lip, so the rest of us could finally start on that diet we had been putting off for so long. Thanks, Craig.
