Xavier Silas has not appeared on an NBA roster since Oct. 25, 2014, when the Washington Wizards waived him. He hasn't given up on his dream, though. Silas, who now plays in Ice Cube's three-on-three league Big3 has accepted a 10-day contract offer from the Boston Celtics.
He is the first Big3 player to sign with an NBA team—a good sign for the upstart league.
Silas has bounced around the pro circuit. A former standout at Colorado and Northern Illinois, he went undrafted in 2011. Silas played internationally, in the G League, and briefly with a few NBA teams, but his stay in the league was always short-lived.
The banged-up Celtics are desperately searching for help. Silas, 30, is 6-foot-5 and plays both guard spots. We'll see if he is able to make a big enough impression to earn a permanent spot on Brad Stevens' roster.
Last season in the Big3, while playing with Tri State and the Ball Hogs, Silas averaged 9.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. He was an All-Mid-American Conference first-teamer for Northern Illinois in 2010-11 as he averaged 22.3 points per game, leading the MAC in that category.
Season Two of the Big3 will air live on Fox Sports. After parting ways with Roger Mason, the league recently hired NBA great Clyde Drexler to be commissioner.
