Cheech Marin Reviews Weed Sneakers

Though the world has come a long way in its reluctant but gradual decriminalization (and occasional legalization) of cannabis, not everyone is ready to roll the dice on how chill el jefe is. Still, just as with the case with the LGBT movement, more people than ever are out of the closet with their cannabis habits.

With the unofficial, but internationally celebrated stoner holiday of 4/20 upon us, what better time and way to show appreciation for the humble plant than with some bud-themed footwear?

As there's a cornucopia of styles to choose from, from subtle nods to the slapped-in-the-face-by-pot-leaves prints, we were going to need some help to sift through all the stoner sneaks options out there.

Who better to weigh in than one of the elder statesmen of pot comedy, Cheech Marin. Not just still smoking after all these years, Marin is also a renowned art collector who’s amassed a stunning and massive collection of Chicano art over the decades. It would be hard to find anyone else more qualified to delve into the aesthetics of pot-themed sneakers.

Here are his takes on the shoes:

Here are his takes on the shoes:

Adidas Superstar 'Phillies Blunt'

Year: 2008

Cheech: Oh, nice! Well made. I like the toe, the print on the toe. The color scheme is really good, the red and brown. Philly Blunt, huh? I’ve never heard of that. I know Philly cheesesteak.

Asics Gel-Lyte 3 'Rasta Pack'

Year: 2015

Cheech: Oh, that’s cool. I like the color scheme again: red, yellow, green thing. Great accents. Not bad.

Diamond Supply Co. Diamond Cuts 'Green Weed Camo'

Year: 2013

Cheech: Now we’re getting somewhere. It’s good. They made the weed work with the camouflage. The tone is good. I’d wear these to get cocktails.

Diamond Supply Co. Brilliant Low Hemp 'Reefer Madness'

Year: 2014

Cheech: Those are cool. I like the aqua shoelaces. Makes the black kinda pop.

Emerica The Figueroa 'Bud Hunter'

Year: 2015

Cheech: These are an "escaping witness’’ shoe. My man was spotted running from the scene with splatter all over his shoes. I mean, you might get used to those and then they’d be your favorite ones. You never know. Robbery shoes.

Huf Hupper '420 Pack'

Year: 2011

Cheech: Who’s that, Huf? Hey! That’s my boys. Huf! They do good stuff. I wear their stuff all the time. Oh, those are nice. They’re substantial. Like ‘PSHHH!’ You could do a lot of stuff in these shoes, which you probably won’t do ‘cause they’re too nice. But the leaves are good in this.

Huf Hupper 'High Times'

Year: 2012

Cheech: What’s that, hemp? They got a nice grade of hemp fabric, nice accents, environmentally friendly.

Nike Stefan Janoski 'Gorge Green'

Year: 2015

Cheech: That’s OK. I’d order a Mai Tai in these.

Palm Angels Slip Ons 'Black Leaf'

Year: 2016

Cheech: Ohh. Nice. [seductive voice] The ladies love these. When you get to the slipper stage you’re doing something right. I like the gold leaf on these.

Sneaker Freaker x Saucony Grid SD 'Kushwacker'

Year: 2015

Cheech: I like that coloring. Where’s the weed?

Supra S1W 'Tree Camo'

Year: 2013

Cheech: Oh, that’s nice. I like that. The heads just popping out.

Vans Slip-On 'Hemp Pack'

Year: 2011

Cheech: More of the hemp deal. Down there in the calypso and Jamaica shit. Could cover a lot of countries in these. These are funky.

Vans Era 'Palm Leaf'

Year: 2012

Cheech: Funky. Little attitude. Like "Hey! I’m the deck hand."

Vans Sk8-Hi 'Palm Leaf'

Year: 2012

Cheech: Nice. A little basketball jones. Vans, off the wall. I like the look. The pattern’s good.

YRU Loafer '420 Kush'

Year: N/A

Cheech: Oh, nice. [Back to seductive voice] Have some Courvoisier, baby.

Nike Dunk SB High 'Cigar City'

Year: 2011

Cheech: Those are nice. Well made. I like the tone of the browns. Where’s the leaf, though?

Nike Dunk SB High 'Cheech and Chong'

Year: 2011

Cheech: Those are nice. Once again. The craftsmanship seems really good. I like the bandana. Oh wow! That’s Tommy’s bandana! I was looking at it like it was more cholo. Yea, and the red top for me. Cool. Are these official shoes? I’d like to get a pair. Nike puts these out? I’m gonna check on these guys.

Nike Dunk SB High 'Skunk'

Year: 2010

Cheech: Those are funky! I like those. I love that color scheme. That’s cool. I want a pair of these. Nikes again? I’ll get a couple dozen pairs of these for my settlement. That nap just works.
