After Adidas employees were arrested by federal agents this week as part of a sizable crackdown on corruption in college basketball, a report has surfaced suggesting another sportswear power will be affected. According to Darren Heitner on Twitter, Nike employees involved with the company's efforts in youth basketball have been subpoenaed by the FBI.
Nike EYBL is a basketball program, founded in 2010, that grooms high school talent. One of the Adidas employees arrested this week, Merl Code, formerly worked for Nike on the EYBL.
Code, along with Adidas basketball exec Jim Gatto, are accused of funneling company money to high school basketball players for bribes as large as $150,000 that would secure commitments to Adidas-sponsored schools. These players were expected to sign deals with Adidas upon turning pro. Code, Gatto, and others are facing federal wire fraud and money laundering charges.
