We're teaming with Everyman Cinemas for a special tenth anniversary screening of Kidulthood on May 18, with the cast in attendance - all the info is here.
Kidulthood is now 10 years old. And while it’s still a great film a decade on, watching again gives you an instant nostalgia blast. Here are the things that’ll instantly take you back.
Tribal Game Boy Advance SP
The Playstation Portable didn’t launch in the UK until late 2005, and decent quality touchscreen smartphones were still a long way off. So if you wanted to play anything more than Snake II, a Game Boy Advance was your best option. Femi Oyeniran plays the flip-style SP model, with a custom tribal design just to make it even more early 2000s.
FIFA 2005
The early-00s were dark days for the FIFA series. That was the time of the early PS2 Pro Evolution Soccer games, which was what serious gamers played, yo. We’d have expected the Kidulthood cast to have been Pro Evo kids tbh, but Adam Deacon and Aml Ameen take in a game of FIFA 2005. Maybe somebody’s mum bought it for them for Christmas.
The Soundtrack
The Kidulthood soundtrack was the perfect mid-00s mixtape, mixing up the finest early grime ("Dizzee Rascal, Lethal Bizzle), UK garage (The Streets) and UK hip-hop (Roots Manuva). Pull up!
Burberry Cap
It might be hard to remember now, but there was a time when Burberry check was thought of as high fashion, not something worn by coked-up football hooligans. The Burberry cap even features as a plot point in the film, when Trife gets accused of stealing it from a West End store.
The Boxfresh Jacket
There’s Boxfresh garms throughout the film — their logo is even in the end credits — but the most iconic piece is the varsity jacket worm by Aml Ameen.
A9 Akademiks Tracksuit
Kidulthood is the second most iconic early-00s appearance of an A9 Akademiks tracksuit, after the video for Dizzee Rascal's "I Luv U".
The Posters
Nothing dates a film like the posters in a kid's bedroom. In Trife’s room, you can clearly see posters for Dizzee’s sophomore album Showtime and the long-forgotten Kevin Hart/Beanie Sigel/ Stacey Dash comedy Paper Soldiers, and Eminem, Estelle and even Britney Spears get represented on the walls of other characters.
The Cameraphones
Nothing takes it back to the old school like OG cameraphones. The Nokia 7610 and a Motorola flip phone both make big appearances in the film.
VK Blue
Don’t pretend you didn’t used to drink them.
