Spike Lee may be directing his first superhero film for Marvel Comics' Nightwatch. (If you don't count Malcolm X.)
The news comes from The Hashtag Show, who also said Luke Cage's showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker will pen the film. While Nightwatch is a Marvel character, his film rights belong to Sony Pictures like others in the Spider-Man universe.
However, this isn't the first time Lee's been attached to the Nightwatch film. Back in September, Jeff Sneider’s Meet the Movie Press podcast also reported that the famed director would be working on Nightwatch.
Nightwatch is relatively new in the Marvel Universe since he debuted in 1993's Web of Spider-Man #97. In his series, readers follow an African-American doctor, Kevin Trench, who stumbles upon a dead body who ends up being a future version of himself. Instead of leaving his remains, he takes the high-tech costume off of his future self and becomes the hero we know as Nightwatch.
Although the Nightwatch film hasn't been officially announced, these rumors are promising. If it's true, this will be the second time THS is right about superhero news in the past few weeks since they also called Kristin Wiig as Wonder Woman's villain in the film's upcoming sequel.
In the meantime, Sony Pictures is slated to release the Tom Hardy–led Venom on Oct. 5, followed up by Silver and Black, which will follow Silver Sable and Black Cat, in 2019. On the animated front, Sony will be droppingSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which teases to show all the iterations of Spider-Man, on Dec. 21. Now with Black Panther clocking in over one billion dollars in the box office, it seems Sony Pictures is willing to bet on black too.
