Samantha Bee on Aziz Ansari: We Need ‘a Higher Standard for Sex than Just Not Rape'

Samantha Bee is encouraging people to 'tune into your partner's feelings throughout sex.'

Aziz Ansari's sexual misconduct allegations sparked a national debate on whether it was sexual assault or terrible miscommunication in the bedroom after his anonymous accuser, who is referred to as Grace, accused him of not picking up on cues that she wasn't into having sex that night.

Now, Samantha Bee is throwing her two cents in on the conversation by taking Grace's side.

"If you don't want to tune into your partner's feelings throughout sex, maybe you shouldn't be fucking a person at all," said Bee on Full Frontal With Samantha Bee's #MeToo Backlash segment. "May I suggest a coin purse or a Ziploc bag full of grape jelly?"

Bee also went after spectators who chastised Grace for not leaving Ansari's apartment when she no longer wanted to be there. "It's harder than you think to leave when you're uncomfortable or scared," said Bee.

The late-night comedy show host also made sure to clarify that although this wasn't an instance of rape (Ansari didn't force himself on her and they ended up not having sex), it still deserves criticism.

"We know the difference between a rapist, a workplace harasser, and an Aziz Ansari," said Bee said. "That doesn't mean we have to be happy about any of them."

Bee continued to explain that we need to be "setting a higher standard for sex than just 'not rape'" and that "women get to talk about it if men don't live up to those standards, especially if that man wrote a book about how to sex good," referring to Ansari's Modern Romance.

"What many fail to understand is that it doesn't have to be rape to ruin your life, and it doesn't have to ruin your life to be worth speaking out about. Any kind of sexual harassment or coercion is unacceptable," said Bee.
