'Jumanji' Dethrones 'Star Wars' at the U.S. Box Office With $35 Million

'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' tops 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' and 'Insidious: The Last Key' at the domestic box office.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is two weeks past its opening weekend and already ruling the box office. The comedy remake just snagged the No. 1 spot from Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the highest grossing film this weekend.

The comedy remake starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan, earned $35 million across North America with showings at nearly 4,000 locations. Jumanji is estimated to bring in a total $241 million domestically by the end of the weekend. And this will be on top of what they've earned in the foreign markets, which is estimated to be over $200 million.

After Jumanji overtook Star Wars on New Year's Day, The Rock, who's currently promoting the movie in China, went to Instagram to share his excitement, and to remind his fans that he still has major love for Star Wars. "THANK YOU so much to the fans worldwide who are having the most fun watching our movie," read the post. "And on the pure Star Wars geek level that I am, when you watch Jumanji, see if you can spot my little easter egg homage to one of my all time favorite movie characters, Han Solo. I’ll give ya a hint.. it’s part of my wardrobe."

Kevin Hart, on the other hand, had one phrase on his mind: "Holy shit."

While The Last Jedi reigned supreme at the box office for the previous three weekends, it's estimated to reel in $26 million from 3,116 locations, creating the opportunity for a new champ to take the coveted spot. Insidious: The Last Key, which opened this weekend, is slated to bring in $24 million with showings at over 4,200 theaters.
