Scary Movie (colloquially known as Scary Movie 6) has launched to a $105 million global opening weekend, shattering every record the franchise had previously set and landing the Wayans family's comeback at No. 1 in the box office.
The Miramax production that cost a total of $30 million, earned $55 million domestically from 3,490 locations — topping the previous franchise domestic record of $49.7 million set by Scary Movie 4 in 2006.
Overseas, the film added $50.5 million across 53 markets — a figure 75% larger than the franchise's prior international best, which had been held by Scary Movie 3.
The film ranked No. 1 in 95% of its overseas footprint. Its top international markets included the UK and Germany at $5.5 million each, Brazil at $5.1 million, France at $3.2 million, and Australia at $2.7 million.
The release reunited the core creative team for the first time since Scary Movie 2 in 2001. Marlon, Shawn, Keenen Ivory, and Craig Wayans returned as screenwriters and producers after more than 17 years away from the series they created — a separation that came after the Weinsteins, who controlled Miramax at the time, pushed them out of the franchise.
In addition to writing, Marlon and Shawn reprise their roles as Shorty and Ray, respectively. Anna Faris and Regina Hall also came back, returning to their iconic roles as Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks.
Pre-release, all signs pointed to Scary Movie 6 being a massive success. The launch trailer for the film amassed over 410 million views in its first seven days, making it the second-biggest trailer debut in Paramount history.
Before the film’s release, Marlon, Shawn, Faris, and their parody version of Ghostface all “hotboxed” inside a giant glass box in Times Square.
With Scary Movie 6 shaping up to be huge, it appears that White Chicks 2 might be happening after all. Before the former came out, Marlon teased that the latter could happen if it was successful.
In an interview with Variety, Marlon explained how talks were ongoing about the sequel and where it would take place, with President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort being an option.
