A Rick and Morty feature film is officially in the works, with co-creator Dan Harmon finally going on record to confirm the project.
Harmon not only verified the film's development to CinemaBlend, but also who’ll be directing it: Jacob Hair, who’s already the supervising director for the show. Harmon said that Hair directing the movie was ideal rather than “going out and just getting somebody that did a great job on another animated thing.”
“He is an absolute, to say rock star is honestly feels like trivializing it because that implies like some kind of flash in the pan, kind of exciting. I mean, Jacob has it as he came onto our team. It was like adding a pillar to it,” Harmon said.
Harmon continued on, comparing Hair to Donald Glover.
“I think when we started talking about a movie and could a movie happen and who would direct it, the first question was, 'Can Jacob do it?' Because that would be a dream, as opposed to going out and just getting somebody that did a great job on another animated thing,” explained Harmon. “This is our guy, who has done some of the most amazing work on the show. It's like the director version of Donald Glover in that I don't know if there's a limitation to what he can do; we haven't found it yet.”
Hair has been on the Rick and Morty team since its fourth season. As supervising director, he’s essentially in charge of directing all of the directors.
The confirmation of the upcoming Rick and Morty movie comes a day after it was leaked online.
Harmon explained what he imagined the film would consist of. “My philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, and spend a bunch of extra money on it and make it 90 minutes long,” Harmon said. “Not to try to earn its feature status by virtue of canonical dramatic tone shifts or anything like that, but rather to just make it a super badass episode of Rick and Morty.”
Back in 2023, Harmon revealed that he’d begun taking early moves to make a Rick and Morty movie. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he joked that Zack Snyder would be directing the film.
“I want to start with a Snyder cut of that movie, and then I want to do the director’s cut of a Snyder cut release, so we can just have a six-hour Rick and Morty movie and three hours of it is in black and white,” he said.
The ninth season of Rick and Morty premieres on May 24.
