Republican congresswoman Lauren Boebert has sparked backlash for her offensive Halloween costume that makes fun of deportation.
Boebert and her boyfriend, Kyle Pearcy, a real estate broker from Windsor, Colorado, drew backlash for their costumes they wore at a Halloween party in Loveland, Colorado, on Oct. 31.
Boebert wore a traditional Mexican dress and a sombrero while her boyfriend wore an ICE vest and military fatigues. Boebert also carried a chalkboard sign that read, “Mexican Word of the Day: JUICY. Tell me if Juicy Ice coming.”
A source reflected on the costumes to ABC News, reportedly saying, "It is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. Even the conservatives [at the party] were in shock. People avoided them.”
Regardless of the backlash, Boebert hasn’t backed down. In a statement, her office seemingly shrugged off the controversy, saying, "It's a Halloween costume. Tell our Senators to vote for the CR and open the government. They are choosing to let millions of American families suffer."
Trisha Calvarese, a Democratic candidate for Colorado's 4th District, posted her thoughts about the costume on X. “Lauren Boebert put more effort into a hateful Halloween party costume than she ever has into serving the people of Colorado’s 4th Congressional District,” she wrote.
Boebert faced controversy about her actions back in 2021 when she compared Democratic representative Ilhan Omar to a bomb-carrying terrorist.
Unlike now, Boebert apologized then. "I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep. Omar," said Boebert at the time. "I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly. There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without this unnecessary distraction."
