The creator of the world-renowned manga One Piece allegedly felt “a bit of regret” with its original anime adaptation, according to the head of an animation studio working on a remake.

Speaking to AI Show about the remake, WIT Studio’s George Wada said that One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda is the reason why the anime is being made.

“The reason we decided to remake One Piece is something the author, Eiichiro Oda, wanted,” Wada said. “He said that One Piece has become very long and full of details, since it started so long ago. The new generation watching modern productions may not feel the same excitement towards the old animation.”

“He felt a bit of regret about that and wanted the new generation to know and follow the story,” Wada continued. “That motivated me to remake this great story using modern techniques suitable for today’s audience.”

Wada also suggested that the remake will have better pacing and less filler, which is also another common complaint with the current One Piece anime.

These precious details about the remake, THE ONE PIECE, arrive after nearly four years of silence. Back in 2023, Netflix unveiled the adaptation at Jump Festa in Tokyo. Since then, no release date for THE ONE PIECE has been revealed, but Netflix has shared that Attack on Titan director Masashi Koizuka will direct the series, and Jujutsu Kaisen’s Hideaki Abi will be assistant director.

Meanwhile, WIT Studio, which is making the One Piece remake, is responsible for some of the biggest, most well-received anime shows today, such as Attack on Titan, Spy x Family, and My Deer Friend Nokotan.
