Martin Scorsese was emotional after earning his first Emmy nomination for acting in The Studio.
The 82-year-old filmmaker’s youngest daughter, Francesca, shared her dad’s reaction to learning about his nomination in an Instagram Story post. Scorsese can be seen covering his face with his hands, suggesting that he was crying.
On July 15, the nominations for the 2025 Emmy Awards ceremony were released. The Oscar-winning film director was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series due to his portrayal of himself in Seth Rogen’s critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series, The Studio.
In March, Rogen opened up about how frightened he was to direct Scorsese in his show while speaking with Stephen Colbert.
“It was great,” Rogen said. “We wrote a part that was very specific. It was Martin Scorsese. He can only play Martin Scorsese. We sent it to his agent and we were so excited when we heard that he liked it and he wanted to do it.”
He continued, “And then I was confronted with the very real reality that I had to now direct Martin Scorsese in something, which, as a director, is your worst nightmare in the entire world, is having to direct one of the greatest living filmmakers in something. And so, I was incredibly scared."
Other nominees in Scorsese’s category were John Bernthal and his other The Studio guest stars Bryan Cranston, Anthony Mackie, Ron Howard, and Dave Franco.
Though this is Scorsese’s first acting Emmy nomination, he’s no stranger to the award ceremony. He earned his first Emmy nomination in 1995 for executive producing the documentary Nothing but the Blues.
In 2011, Scorsese won his first Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for directing the pilot episode of Boardwalk Empire. He also earned nominations for Outstanding Drama — as an executive producer — in that year and the following one.
In 2012, Scorsese won two Emmy awards for directing and producing the documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World.
Tune in to CBS and Paramount+ on Sept. 14 at at 8 p.m. To see the 2025 Emmy Awards live.
