A man was removed from his car and shot by furious bystanders after he drove his vehicle into a crowd in Los Angeles.
NBC reports that in the early morning hours of July 19, 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez plowed his vehicle into a crowd outside of the Vermont Hollywood nightclub, critically injuring seven people and hurting at least 23 others.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Ramirez seemingly drove into the crowd on purpose after he was kicked out of the nightclub due to intoxication.
When the LAPD responded to the incident, they discovered the driver “being assaulted by bystanders and determined he had sustained a gunshot wound.”
The police went on to arrest Ramirez, who has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Since he’s currently hospitalized for his injuries, he hasn’t yet been booked in jail as of this writing.
The description that the LAPD provided for the person who shot the driver is that he’s "a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall, 180 pounds, bald, wearing a blue jersey, and possibly armed with a silver revolver."
The Vermont Hollywood released a statement about the incident after it happened, saying that its staff is cooperating with the LAPD to hold the alleged perpetrator accountable.
“We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure the person responsible for this horrific act is held fully accountable,” it wrote on Instagram. “We also want to extend our sincere gratitude to the first responders for their swift and compassionate action in assisting those affected.”
