Update 1/24/25 7:02 p.m. ET: The victim of the shooting has been identified as Alex Pretti.

As confirmed by Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, Pretti was a Minneapolis resident and U.S. citizen with only traffic violations on his criminal record. He also had a valid permit to carry a firearm.

Border Patrol Commander-At-Large Greg Bovino alleges Pretti did not have proper identification and did not mention if the gun was drawn. Video of the incident from the perspective of a bystander directly in front of the scene shows Pretti’s gun being removed from his waistband prior to being shot.

Pretti was an ICU nurse who worked at Veterans Affairs. In a statement released in the wake of his death, the American Nurses Association wrote, “ANA condemns violence in our communities. The seriousness of this incident and others demand transparency and accountability. ANA calls for a full, unencumbered investigation, and urges that findings be shared promptly and clearly so Alex’s loved ones and the public have answers.”

A 37-year-old U.S. man was shot by federal agents in Minneapolis, just weeks after one of them shot and killed Renee Good.

According to a U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, the incident occurred around 9 a.m. local time, when agents, who were conducting immigration enforcement, were approached by a man with a 9 millimeter handgun and two magazines of ammunition.

When agents attempted to disarm him, DHS claimed that he “violently resisted,” prompting one of the agents to fire “defensive shots.” The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A video of the altercation shows the man being surrounded by DHS members as everyone struggles, with an officer breaking away and firing several shots at the man on the ground.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara claimed that the deceased man had no record of violent criminal offenses and was a “lawful” gun owner who had a permit to carry.

Governor Tim Walz issued a statement about the shooting.

"Minnesota has had it. This is sickening," he said. "The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now."

The shooting occurred one day after a citywide general strike in protest of ICE efforts in the region. That strike, in turn, came weeks after the shooting of Renée Good on Jan. 7. Good was fatally shot by a federal agent who claimed to believe that she was attempting to run him over. Subsequent investigation of video footage put that story in doubt.

"[T]he visual evidence shows no indication that the agent who fired the shots, Jonathan Ross, had been run over," a New York Times investigation discovered.

On social media, DHS said that Good was “impeding a law enforcement operation” before the situation occurred.
