Terry Crews experienced déjà vu regarding Hulk Hogan's behavior when the latter appeared at the Republican National Committee convention last month. He saw the character he played in a movie that was seemingly a parody of Hogan in the first place.
For context, Hogan surprised the world in July when he popped up to support Donald Trump at the RNC. He took the stage while waving an American flag and his “Real American” theme song played throughout the venue.
His entire speech was one massive glazing of Trump—calling the former president and J.D. Vance “the greatest tag team of all time” as well as even commenting on Trump’s attempted assassination. “They tried to kill the next President of the United States,” he said. “Enough was enough! I said, ‘Let Trumpamania run wild! Let Trumpamania rule again and let Trumpamania make America great again!
How does all of this tie into Terry Crews?
Well back in 2006, the former football player-turned-actor starred in the movie Idiocracy as a character who was a hyper patriotic parody of Hogan if the wrestler became president.
Crews’ character played up Hogan’s clear cut love for the country, which was for jokes at the time—but even he’s shocked to see just how close Hogan is to his old parody character now in 2024.
“First of all, it was down to the mustache, the head wrap, the ripped off shirt.” said Crews, speaking to AP News Entertainment. “I was going ‘What in the world!’. You don’t understand! I was going ‘that’s what I did! But this is real life!’
“Years ago and this stuff was starting and it was Trump/Hillary, I was getting calls from Time Magazine,” he continued. “They were like ‘Hey, we see a lot of resemblances to what’s going on’. I was like ‘They’ll never get that far’. We officially have gone that far.”
Hogan’s political support may border on fanatical, but he’s spoken in the past about never wanting to actually pursue a career in politics — even if he thinks he’d win the race.
Speaking about it in 2018, Hogan denied the rumors that he was planning to run for U.S. Senate in Florida.
“They want me to run for governor, they want me to run for mayor,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’m just so confused because it’s like watching the politicians, the Democrats and the Republicans, it’s like nobody wants to work together. It’s like a wrestling match, with two wrestlers that are supposed to work together and paint this beautiful wrestling picture."
“The Republicans and Democrats act like they hate each other and they don’t want to do anything except create chaos,” he continued. “So I really don’t want to be any part of that.”
