Straight Outta Compton, the wildly successful N.W.A. biopic that's spent the past three weeks perched atop the domestic box office, has inspired the relatively predictable phenomenon of what can only be described as sequel frenzy. Shortly after Daz Dillinger told TMZ that a Compton sequel centered on Snoop Dogg and Tupac was already in development, a representative from Universal quickly squashed that hope by revealing they actually had no idea what Daz was talking about.
However, Straight Outta Compton's sequel frenzy is still very much alive. The recently re-released 2001 documentary Welcome to Death Row is reportedly being shopped as a potential follow-up, with a deal intended to include both the film and the book of the same name. According to the Hollywood Reporter, no necessary music rights are currently affiliated with Welcome to Death Row, though a similar situation originally faced Compton before rights were secured in 2002.
S. Leigh Savidge, the writer and director behind Welcome to Death Row, was also heavily involved in the story development process for Straight Outta Compton. In fact, Savidge received a story credit for the film alongside Alan Wenkus and Andrea Berloff. Welcome to Death Row centers on the years after N.W.A.'s formation, including detailed explorations of the lives of Tupac, Snoop, and Suge Knight.
