The Mummy star Tom Cruise casually confirmed Top Gun 2 during an appearance on Australia's morning program Sunrise Tuesday. Cruise revealed the sequel, which has battled development difficulties for years, is expected to begin production relatively soon.
"It's true," Cruise said when asked about sequel rumors. "I'm gonna start filming it probably in the next year. It's happening. It is definitely happening . . . You're the first people that I've said [this to]."
Top Gun sequel chatter has been, to say the least, extremely confusing to follow. The sequel to the 1986 classic feels like it's been "confirmed" on multiple occasions. As recently as last year, Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were publicly hyping up Top Gun 2 discussions:
But four years earlier, the New York Timesreported that the sequel had "fallen apart" in the wake of original Top Gun director Tony Scott's death.
With the sequel now back on track, fans were quick on Twitter to toss out Top Gun 2 plot predictions ranging from reasonable to ridiculous:
