While confusion still abounds among more casual fans, one thing has become strikingly clear in recent days: All is not well between Minecraft-focused streamers TommyInnit and Dream.
In his most recent YouTube upload as of this writing, Tommy gave fans a video he described as “a message to Dream,” whom he has “blocked on everything” at the moment. Off the top, Tommy mentioned Dream’s recent use of the r-word in reference to Tommy’s fans, saying that his mother “worked with adults with disabilities.” According to Tommy, he himself volunteered with his mother in this field when he was younger.
“It’s impossibly immature and reckless and sets such a shitty precedent to everyone,” Tommy said. “Shame on you, man.”
From there, Tommy accused Dream and company of speaking about women “behind the scenes” in a “sexist” manner. He also argued that Dream treated him poorly when they first became friends, pointing out that he was at 16 at the time (Tommy, notably, later argued that this was an unfair point to make. More on that later).
“Four years ago, you were awful to me,” he said. “When I was 16 , you gave me YouTube advice and you held that over my head of years. You didn’t treat me like an equal and you made me feel small.
Additional claims from Tommy included harassment of his mother during a divorce, “proper movie villain” behavior, lies, and an inability to accept criticism.
“I really hope you’re not a genuine bad person with a bad heart,” he said, as seen above. “But you need to get off the internet now. Go and get some therapy.”
Dream, meanwhile, in his own most recent YouTube upload as of this writing (titled “I’m Sorry (but not to TommyInnit”), pushed back against these claims. But first, he shared an apology for his use of the r-word.
“I posted a meme on twitter that used the r-word and I shouldn’t have done that,” Dream told fans. “I’m sorry, genuinely. I think its important to acknowledge right off the bat that that’s not right. That’s not how you should behave. I shouldn’t have done it. Period.”
Dream added that he was “angry enough to post something so stupid” due to Tommy, who he accused of continuing to “joke about and support” the spread of false claims about him. As of the sexism claim from Tommy, Dream told fans “I don’t even know what this is about,” further pointing out that Tommy didn’t immediately share “context ore evidence” on this claim.
He also addressed the remarks about being treated poorly at 16, like so: “I gave you YouTube advice because I thought that you were extremely talented, hard-working, and you had a big dream to be a YouTuber. That’s why, with no expectations, we called for hours a day talking about YouTube strategies and ideas. I never held this over your head. Most people hearing that I helped you at all are probably hearing this for the first time.”
Other claims from Dream regarding Tommy included mentions of alleged child labor being used in merchandise, as well as a “literal editor sweatshop.” Tommy, he argued, is being “high and mighty” and acting like the “savior of YouTube.”
On the topic of allegedly harassing Tommy’s mother, Dream said that he actually only communicated with her once. To back this up, Dream shared what he said was a screenshot of a message he sent to her. In it, he says, in part, that he didn’t want her to be “attacked” by fans.
“I was 20 and 21. I didn’t treat you like a kid,” Dream said when reflecting on his and Tommy’s earlier years. “I treated you like my friend and colleague. We had occasional disagreements.”
Deeper into the video, shared Monday, Dream proposed that Tommy should further stand behind his own claims by taking down any videos that feature him. In return, Dream said, he’ll do the same with any Tommy-featuring videos on his channel.
“I’m proud of everything that you’ve accomplished but you don’t need to put other people down to lift yourself up,” he added. “You’re talented enough on your own.”
The full context as to what, exactly, is going on here would require more time than is currently available for me. To that end, KnowYourMeme has a detailed rundown available. In it, it’s pointed out that Mizkif and xQc were both involved in the brewing feud at one point, though the issues between Tommy and Dream, specifically, seemingly stem from a bit deeper into the past.
