‘The Mandalorian’ Creator Jon Favreau on How Long Fans Can Expect Series to Continue

Favreau's latest comments arrive shortly after he confirmed he had already written Season 4. Meanwhile, Season 3 is currently in the middle of its run.

Jon Favreau is in no rush to put a bow on The Mandalorian, and that’s thanks in large part to how much he’s enjoying the continued experience of both expanding the Star Wars universe and honoring all that’s come before it.

Favreau, creator of the Disney+ series, recently hit up Entertainment Weekly’s Dagobah Dispatch podcast alongside executive producer Dave Filoni for an extended conversation that notably arrives right in the middle of the show’s third season rollout.

As for how long fans can expect the massively successful Pedro Pascal-starring project to keep going, Favreau was careful not to get specific. The filmmaker, however, was more than willing to detail how personally fulfilling the series and all its related properties have been for him.

“I don’t know what would make me not enjoy doing it, especially as long as the audience is connecting with these characters,” Favreau explained. “This feels like a really enjoyable moment and I love this format of telling one chapter at a time and keeping the audience guessing and also fulfilling certain expectations. It’s a really wonderful format.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Favreau pointed out just how “rich” the backdrop for ongoing stories has become over the past few years, as well as highlighted an integral difference between attempting to do a series of feature-length films as opposed to a chapter-by-chapter television narrative.

While films would require him and others behind the camera to repeatedly assemble a new group of people for each go-around, the approach they’ve taken with The Mandalorian allows for a continuity across talent and crew alike.

“We get to inherit this great group of talented people that we could work with every year,” he said.

As caught-up fans will point out, Favreau recently revealed that he had already mapped out what the series’ fourth season will look like.

“I’ve written it already,” Favreau told BFM TV in February, adding that it’s important for those working on the show “to know where we’re going” so they can “tell a fully formed story.”

Season 3 of The Mandalorian is currently in the middle of its eight-episode run. The Carl Weathers-directed “Chapter 20: The Foundling,” written by Favreau and Filoni, is now available on Disney+.
