Donkey, a Shrek spinoff centered on Eddie Murphy’s beloved character from the ever-expanding franchise, is moving beyond mere speculation and squarely into confirmation territory.
In recent days, the film, long discussed as a possibility (with the idea publicly and enthusiastically supported by Murphy himself), scored an official release date. Not only that, but we’ve also received word on what, exactly, to expect from Donkey’s story, plus who will be in the director’s chair for the latest Shrek spinoff project.

Donkey hits theaters in 2028
As reported by Deadline and other trades in recent days, the aptly titled Donkey will be released by DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures on June 30, 2028. Murphy, of course, will return to voice the title character.
Donkey is billed as an origin story for Murphy’s Shrek character
Per reports, this will take the origin story route, not unlike the previous Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots. Charlie Bean directs, while Matt Flynn and Rebecca Huntley are credited as co-director and producer, respectively.
Who else is involved with Donkey’s solo cinematic outing?

Puss in Boots, released in 2011, cleared more than half a billion dollars globally. Its sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, fared similarly. These numbers are on par with the total worldwide box office haul of the original Shrek, which became a runaway hit back in 2001 and has thus far spawned four sequels, including next year’s Zendaya-featuring Shrek 5.
