Seth Rogen, who currently has not one but two critically acclaimed gems on Apple TV+, says he was initially skeptical about whether “the biggest corporation in the history of the world” would be down with his signature brand of storytelling.
Specifically, as Rogen told Late Night’s Seth Meyers on Monday, he wasn’t convinced Apple would be rocking with depictions of drug use, despite their most ubiquitous product incidentally boasting snort-easing design.
“It’s amazing that the biggest corporation in the history of the world has invested in me. … Even working with them, I was like, I can’t imagine that our brand of humor is gonna fly with these people,” Rogen, who can currently be seen in both The Studio and Platonic on Apple’s streaming platform, said. “I remember reading the scripts for Platonic and there’s literally a scene in the first season where we’re snorting cocaine and ketamine off an iPhone.”
Rogen continued, “I remember thinking, I don’t know if Apple’s gonna be cool with this. But Apple let it happen! They let it happen. And I’m not saying you should snort cocaine off an iPhone. I’m just saying it is technically the perfect cocaine-snorting surface.”
Rogen and Meyers went on to trade playful barbs about Apple’s presumed policies on depictions of iPhone usage, with Rogen pointing out “there’s some weird stuff” in that department. From there, their conversation touched on everything from Marcel (the monkey from Friends) to Rogen’s advice when it comes delivery robots, for which his Platonic character has a particular disdain rivaled only by his disgust over the omnipresence of electric scooters.
The Studio, helmed by Rogen and frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg, is up for 23 total Emmy nominations this year. Platonic, meanwhile, recently launched its second season. Rogen is joined in the comedy by Rose Byrne, to hilarious effect. Both series are very much worth your time.
