Saturday Night Live will kick off season 42 in October with a trio of new cast members, NBC announced Monday. Deadlinereported that a couple of white dudes, Alex Moffat and Mikey Day, will join Melissa Villaseñor as featured players starting with the season premiere Oct. 1. Considering that SNL recently lost Jay Pharoah and Taran Killam, we have to ask: who the hell are these new people?
Villaseñor is a stand-up comedian and all-around multihyphenate based in Los Angeles. Though most known to the average SNL viewer as a finalist on Season 6 of America's Got Talent, Villaseñor also boasts multiple voices on the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time and additional credits on Family Guy. She also works as an actor, musician, and graphic artist.
Day should be a familiar name for SNL enthusiasts, as he's been a writer on the show since 2013. This summer, Day also wrote and appeared on NBC's Maya and Marty variety show starring Maya Rudolph and Martin Short. Day has also written for Nick Cannon's Short Circuitz and Robot Chicken and appeared as himself on Wild 'N Out.
Moffat has been a regular presence at Second City, The Comedy Bar, and The Annoyance Theatre in Chicago. Last year's Uncle John, a crime drama co-starring John Ashton and Jenna Lyng, marked Moffat's feature film debut. According to his Annoyance Theatre bio, Moffat also starred in a previous sketch series pilot for NBC.
In addition to Killam and Pharoah's departure this season, SNL is parting ways with Jon Rudnitsky. Rudnitsky, who is exiting the show after just one season, briefly garnered national attention with his depiction of CNN's Anderson Cooper. "Seth Meyers did a spoof of me years ago that was really funny and I'm all for being spoofed," Cooper told Andy Cohen of the depiction in October. "It was like the only thing [Rudnitsky] knew about me was that I was gay so that's sort of what he went with. I got a little Truman Capote vibe, which I thought was odd."
