Ramy Youssef Reflects on His First Experience With a Heckler on ‘Hot Ones’

On the latest 'Hot Ones,' Golden Globe winner Ramy Youssef opens up about everything from the continued influence of Larry David to dealing with hecklers.

Ramy Youssef, star and creator of Hulu’s Ramy and co-creator of Netflix’s Mo, is the latest to simultaneously tackle hot questions and even hotter wings alongside Sean Evans.

Tucked into the latest Hot Ones is some insight from the Golden Globe winner about his approach to dealing with hecklers, as well as a recollection of his inaugural experience with someone interrupting one of his stand-up sets earlier into his career.

“I don’t like making fun of hecklers,” Youssef said around five minutes into the new episode. “I think there’s a lot of, like, watching a comedian take down a person in the audience. And well, yeah, of course we should be able to take them down. There’s a reason we have the mic. Like, yeah, the comedian’s funnier than the audience member. Yes, obviously. Should be. So I kind of try to figure out why they’re being so loud.”

As for his first heckler, Youssef hilariously noted the matter-of-factness with which the audience member’s remarks were shouted out.

“I remember being in Jacksonville, Florida once,” he said. “This was my first real heckle and I think I just said that I was Muslim and this woman was just like, ‘Oh, we don’t do that here.’ Loud from the back, she’s like, ‘We don’t do that here.’ I’m like, oh. Okay. You’re making it sound like it’s just, uh, ‘We don’t have vegan food.’ It wasn’t even hateful. It was just like, ‘Oh … the air is just not conducive to Muslim life forms.’”

Elsewhere, Youssef detailed what he explains as the continued influence of Larry David’s writing on modern comedy and opened up about how a pre-fame job at Apple helped him master the art of the pitch.
