'People v. O.J. Simpson' Director Bringing Tupac and Biggie True Crime Series to USA

USA is getting in the true crime game with a Tupac and Biggie murder series.

USA wants a piece of the true crime obsession currently sweeping TV. With Unsolved, a new true crime serial centered on the murders of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G., they just might get it. The network has given the series a pilot order, with Deadlinereporting Thursday that Anthony Hemingway (The People v. O.J. Simpson) would be directing and executive producing.

Unsolved centers on two police investigations surrounding the murders, pulling from the experiences of former Los Angeles Police Department detective Greg Kading. Kading, who released the book Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations in 2011, was at the head of several task forces focused on solving the murders. Kyle Long (Suits) will write the pilot script with Kading bagging a consultant credit.

In addition to helming five episodes of the inaugural season of American Crime Story for FX, Hemingway has directed episodes of Orange Is the New Black, Empire, Glee, and The Newsroom. Earlier this year, Hemingway won an Outstanding Limited Series Emmy for his work on The People v. O.J. Simpson and scored a nomination for the episode "Manna From Heaven." Aside from his extensive television output, Hemingway also directed the 2012 film Red Tails.

Tupac and Biggie's unsolved murders will also be the focus of the forthcomingLabyrinth, Brad Furman's new film starring Johnny Depp as late LAPD detective Russell Poole. That film, according to Screen Daily, will draw inspiration from Randall Sullivan’s 2003 novel of the same name.
