Paul Feig's 'Ghostbusters' Reboot Is Definitely Getting a Sequel, Sony Says

Sony executive Rory Bruer says Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot is definitely getting a sequel.

Let's get one little fact out of the way before moving on to bigger and better things: Ghostbusters II, released back in 1989, was not a very good movie. The reliably hilarious cast held the film together well enough, though it's hard to argue against the fact that the magic of the 1984 original wasn't exactly emulated in the belated sequel.

This year's Ghostbusters reboot, however, more than delivered on its promises of both paying homage to its source material and moving the franchise forward for a modern audience. Thankfully, the success of Paul Feig's bro-battling film has already (reportedly!) paved the way for a Ghostbusters II do-over.

"While nothing has been officially announced yet, there's no doubt in my mind [a sequel] will happen," Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony, told the Wrap on Tuesday. "I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise." Sony did not immediately respond to Complex's request for comment, but Bruer's words certainly point to good things for Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and the rest of the new Ghostbusters crew.

Ghostbusters opened by making just over $46 million at the box office over the weekend, which was strong enough for a second place finish behind whatever the hell The Secret Life of Pets is. Despite not giving Feig's film the top spot, that opening haul is clearly enough to give the studio the confidence to keep busting ghosts for the foreseeable future.

Ill-advised haters be damned, the new Ghostbusters are thankfully here to stay. Get over it, lames.
