Netflix Makes Return of ‘Squid Game’ Official, Teases Season 2 Details

In addition to sharing a teaser video and formal Season 2 announcement, the streamer provided some hints about what fans should expect in the new episodes.

Netflix shared a formal announcement of Squid Game’s return over the weekend, confirming the global hit will indeed give fans more to obsess over with a second season.

In addition to sharing a short teaser video featuring a close-up view of an eerily familiar eye, the streamer shared a statement from series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who confirmed (among other things) that fans can expect to meet the boyfriend of Young-hee, a.k.a. The Doll.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year,” the writer and director said. “But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”

Confirmed to be returning are Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) and the Front Man, who oversees the to-the-death competitions.

While no specifics were unveiled as to when, exactly, fans can expect Season 2 to debut, executive producer Kim Ji-yeon confirmed in a statement to the Netflix-owned Tudum site that the writing process has been initiated. The overarching goal this time around is to make the series “even more joyful to the global audience.”

In May, Hwang Dong-hyuk—who’s also working on a new satirical project inspired by Squid Game’s success—suggested in an interview withVanity Fair that fans shouldn’t expect new episodes until late 2023 at the earliest.

For much of last year, Squid Game maintained a headlines-dominating presence among a crowded streaming landscape due to both its critical acclaim and its massive popularity. In November, Netflix shared data showing Squid Game as its biggest show ever, and by quite a margin.
