While rival Jimmy Kimmel was busy encouraging parents to lie to their children about devouring all their hard-earned Halloween candy Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert was waxing existential with Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson. During the latest edition of Colbert's popular Late Show segment "Big Questions With Even Bigger Stars," Gibson vaguely addressed the anti-Semitic remarks he made during a 2006 drunk driving incident that severely damaged his career.
As the two gazed out at a bunch of fake stars and planets, Colbert asked Gibson if he had any regrets when looking back on his life. "No, not one," Gibson said. "They tend to come in clusters." When asked what he would tell his younger self if given the chance to engage in a bout of time-traveling, Gibson offered some surprisingly sage advice.
"Don't be so caught up in the little things," Gibson said. "Take advantage of all the gifts the world has to offer. Live every day to the fullest. I'd also tell myself, my younger self, to shut the fuck up."
Gibson struck a less playful tone when discussing his 2006 remarks with Variety last month, expressing frustration that the "unscrupulous police officer" was never prosecuted for recording him. "Ten years have gone by," Gibson said. "I'm feeling good. I'm sober, all of that kind of stuff, and for me it's a dim thing in the past. But others bring it up, which kind of I find annoying, because I don't understand why after 10 years it's any kind of issue. Surely if I was really what they say I was, some kind of hater, there'd be evidence of actions somewhere. There never has been."
