Suicide Squad wasn't exactly a critical darling, but it clearly made a studio-approved amount of dollars at the box office. To keep the Squad dreams alive, Warner Bros. has officially put a David Ayer and Margot Robbie reunion in motion. The two will reteam for Gotham City Sirens, the Hollywood Reporterannounced Tuesday.
Gotham City Sirens will focus on the "top female villains from the DC stable," meaning Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn. In the comic book series of the same name, Quinn was joined by Catwoman and Poison Ivy, both of whom have been brought to the big screen in now-vintage Batman films to varying degrees of success:
The script for Sirens will be penned by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, a name you might recognize from that forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot. Ayer will direct and produce, while Robbie will star and executive produce. Sirens, according toTHR, doesn't have a firm release strategy in place but has now been put on the "fast track."
A straight-up Suicide Squad sequel, which Ayer previously suggested could be R-rated, is still in development. "For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here," Ayer toldMTV News back in April. "We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It's got edge, and it's got attitude." The studio is also reportedly "looking into" putting together a spin-off for Deadshot starring Will Smith.
