Lionel Boyce Reveals Who He'd Cast in Hypothetical 'Loiter Squad' Revival

Boyce says his fellow 'The Bear' star Ayo Edebiri would be a good fit, as would a couple other familiar faces.

Adult Swim’s Loiter Squad, despite coming to a close over a decade ago, still gets frequent mentions amid the respective breakout careers of its stars. Among them is Lionel Boyce, once known as L-Boy, who has gone on to garner acclaim as an actor for his turn as pastry chef Marcus on The Bear and his upcoming appearance in the Ryan Gosling-led Project Hail Mary.

At the New York premiere of the Andy Weir adaptation, @_mamitiff_ asked the Emmy-nominated actor who he might cast in a hypothetical revival of the Odd Future-associated sketch comedy series.

“I have so many, like, funny friends,” Boyce said when speaking with @_mamitiff_ for Complex on Wednesday (March 18). “I think obviously, like, [The Bear star] Ayo [Edebiri], Devon Walker, who's on SNL. … I think the goal is always just throw your friends in there and let it be stupid.”

Boyce, as seen above, went on to agree that Tyriq Withers—who starred in last year’s I Know What You Did Last Summer return, as well as a memorable Season 3 episode of Donald Glover’s Atlanta—would also be a fit.

“Yeah, he’s funny too,” Boyce said. “I’ll throw him in there. He’s got some good physical comedy.”

Loiter Squad ran for three seasons, last airing in 2014. The following year, Tyler, The Creator—de facto leader of the now-defunct Odd Future collective—told the Trussville Tribune that the series was successful in opening the doors “for other things that my boys want to do,” though all involved were “off that” by that point.

In Project Hail Mary, out Friday, Boyce plays Carl, a supporting character who proves crucial in the film’s larger story about a long-shot effort to save Earth from imminent destruction. Complex recently caught an advance screening of the film, and we can confirm it lives up to the hype.
