UPDATE 08/25/16:
Following an attack by racist trolls earlier this year that ignited a mainstream debate on Twitter's harassment policy, Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones is now the victim of a vicious hack. TMZreports that Jones' official website and iCloud account appeared to have been hacked as of Wednesday morning. The hacked website has since been removed entirely.
The hacked site was altered to include photos of the Saturday Night Live comedian's personal identification documents, including a driver's license and passport. According to TMZ, "naked photos" were also briefly posted to the site. A video of Harambe, the gorilla who was killed earlier this year at the Cincinnati Zoo, was also posted to the hacked site before Jones' camp had it removed.
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton reached out to Jones on Twitter Thursday, saying "no one deserves" this kind of harassment:
A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security toldEntertainment Weekly Thursday that an investigation had been opened following the hack. "The investigation is currently ongoing," said the spokesperson. "In order to protect the integrity of the case, no further details are available at this time."
Speaking with fellow SNL legend Seth Meyers last month, Jones opened up about being the target of racist trolls surrounding the release of Ghostbusters. "What's scary about the whole thing is that the insults didn't hurt me," Jones said. "Unfortunately I'm used to the insults. That's unfortunate. What scared me was the injustice of a gang of people jumping against you for such a sick cause."
In a statement to the Associated Press following Jones' harassment in July, a Twitter spokesperson condemned the trolls' actions. "This type of abusive behavior is not permitted on Twitter, and we've taken action on many of the accounts reported to us by both Leslie and others," the spokesperson said. "We rely on people to report this type of behavior to us but we are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to prevent this kind of abuse. We realize we still have a lot of work in front of us before Twitter is where it should be on how we handle these issues."
Representatives for Leslie Jones did not immediately respond to Complex's request for comment.
