Laura Dern's 'Marriage Story' Win Gives Netflix Its First Acting Oscar

As expected, Laura Dern—whose turn in Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story as attorney Nora Fanshaw was indeed great—took home the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 2020 edition of the Oscars.

The win is not only the first Oscar victory for Dern, but also make history for the Netflix platform. Dern's Marriage Story distinction gives the streaming giant bragging rights on the first acting-related Oscar to be awarded to a streaming service-distributed movie.

"We have the power to say something, and when we don't see our culture reflected around us, we get to say something," Dern said during the ceremony on Sunday, perVariety. "I think that's the biggest shift we’ve seen in the last couple of years. Voices matter, and a community of voices rallying around the truth really matter—in journalism, in this industry, and in many others. So make sure that your crew and the storytelling reflects our global community."

Among the other firsts included in Sunday night's show are Taika Waititi becoming the first person of Māori descent to win an Oscar. He won for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit, a movie he wrote and directed, as well as co-stars in as an imaginary friend version of Adolf Hitler.

Parasite, which walked away with four awards, made history as the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture. The acclaimed Bong Joon-ho film also won for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.
