Rei Ami, who has risen to a new level of global stardom thanks to her work on Netflix’s Grammy and Oscar-winning hit KPop Demon Hunters, says she was able to make “a dream come true” by paying off her parents’ mortgage last year.

Speaking with Etalk on the Oscars 2026 red carpet this past Sunday (March 15), the singer, featured on Best Original Song winner “Golden” as part of the HUNTR/X group, looked back on the sacrifices her parents made that helped lay the groundwork for her success.

“My parents and I, we immigrated here when I was seven years old to Maryland, DC, DMV area,” she emotionally recalled, as seen below. “Didn't know a lick of English. … And throughout all my life, my parents have sacrificed, always prioritized me and my sister. And because of their hard work, blood, sweat, and tears we’re at the Oscars. I got to surprise them and pay off their mortgage. So, that was like a dream come true. So, I'm just so grateful to be here. I love you. I love you, Oscars!”

Rei Ami went on to specify that the mortgage surprise occurred during the 2025 holiday season, marking the fulfillment of a goal she’s had since she was a teen.

“Since 16, I had that goal and I got to check it off last Christmas and I feel so damn great for that,” she added.

For her Oscars 2026 red carpet look, the singer opted for patterns designed to symbolize the Bonghwang, a sacred bird from Korean mythology. Below, get a closer look at the standout fashion moment from Indian designer Rahul Mishra.

KPop Demon Hunters took home two Oscars this year, including Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song. For a full list of 2026 winners, see here.
