Jim Carrey Worries ‘Some Sickos Out There’ Might Try to Copy Paul Dano’s Riddler From ‘The Batman’

Jim Carrey, who previously took on the task of embodying the Riddler in the late Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, says he has “mixed emotions” about Paul Dano’s version of the DC supervillain.

In a Unilad-shared interview in promotion of this month’s Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, Carrey was asked for his thoughts on how Riddler is depicted in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, prompting the actor to reveal that he hasn’t yet seen the film. And while the 60-year-old considers Dano a “tremendous” talent, the depiction simply isn’t his cup of tea.

“I have not seen it,” Carrey said this week. “I don’t know. It’s a very dark version. I have mixed emotions about it. To each his own and all that. I love him as an actor, he’s a tremendous actor. … I do worry, there’s a spot of worry in me about gaffer-taping people’s faces and like, you know, encouraging people to do the same, you know? Some sickos out there that might adopt that method.”

From there, Carrey continued by speaking more generally about having a “conscience” about the roles he picks these days, specifically noting the ultimately harmless arsenal of his Sonic villain. He also praised the current state of the Batman franchise while reiterating that it’s just not for him.

“So I do have a conscience about the things I choose,” he said. “And Robotnik has cartoon bombs and no one gets hurt. I know there’s a place for it and I don’t wanna criticize it but it’s not my kind of thing, you know. It’s not my kind of deal. It’s well done, it’s very well done. Those movies are very well done.”

The Batman, featuring Robert Pattinson in the title role, opened to critical and commercial acclaim in March. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, meanwhile, opens April 8. Below, revisit the recently released final trailer for Jeff Fowler’s film, which arrives just over two years after the very lucrative original.
