If you were hoping to wake up this morning with the realization that this whole Republican National Convention thing was some sort of elongated nightmare, you're probably pretty bummed right now. Shit's real and decidedly not spectacular. At the top of this mountain of ridiculousness is Melania Trump's RNC address, which many have argued borrowed quite heavily from a previous speech by First Lady Michelle Obama. But, hey, at least we have Stephen Colbert returning to form just in time for some proper mockery! It's the little things.
On Tuesday's live Late Show broadcast, Colbert was kind enough to give Melania Trump a platform from which to explain away the heavy plagiarism accusations made against her. As the real Melania and Colbert aren't exactly BFFs, viewers were instead gifted with Laura Benanti (Gypsy, Supergirl) doing a hilariously spot-on impression. "My fellow Americans," the fake Melania told the audience. "This is truly the best of times. It is the worst of times. I did not plagiarize my speech last night. I would never do such a thing. I would not, could not with a goat. I would not, could not on a boat!"
As if borrowing some Dr. Seuss lines wasn't enough, fake Melania then informed the audience of her humble upbringings that kinda sortadefinitely sounded like they were pulled straight from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. "To those who say I stole my speech, give me a break!" fake Melania said. "Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar." A touching moment of reflection, really.
Never one to let a sadly real Donald Trump moment go by unchecked, Colbert also put his own spin on the apparent GOP nominee's melodramatic RNC entrance:
The RNC continues its WTF-esque vibes in Cleveland through Thursday, meaning there's still plenty of time for Colbert to bring back Jon Stewart and their very special friend again. Do it for the people, Stephen.
