Dwayne Johnson Revisits Viral Fanny Pack Photo on 'GOAT Talk': 'I Felt So Confident'

Johnson and Blunt star in Benny Safdie's 'The Smashing Machine,' out today.

Dwayne Johnson looks back on his forever-viral fanny pack photo in the latest episode of Complex’s GOAT Talk, out now.

For the episode, Johnson was joined by his The Smashing Machine co-star Emily Blunt, with both actors trading thoughts on everything from conspiracy theories to their personal favorite films.

On the latter front, Jaws and The Godfather Part II both got shoutouts, as did the 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life. The James Stewart-led Christmas drama, notably, was recently cited by The Smashing Machine director Benny Safdie as one of several reference points behind his A24-backed take on the real-life story of Mark Kerr.

As for matters of fanny packery, Johnson named the oft-referenced photo from the '90s as his pick for the “GOAT time” he’s gone viral.

“You see all the snickers, hear the laughs,” Johnson joked. “Every time I see that image pop up, I think man, I felt so confident with what I was wearing that day.”

Johnson also addressed a turtleneck protection strategy he employed while taking the photo, telling Blunt he “put a little tissue” down to prevent his top from getting “dusty.”

Elsewhere, Johnson and Blunt both praised Kendrick Lamar when discussing their favorite rappers. Johnson also tucked in a shoutout to Rakim. See more in the full episode of GOAT Talk up top.

The Smashing Machine is out Friday, and you should definitely make a point to catch in theaters. Both Johnson and Blunt deliver remarkably dialed-in performances emboldened by Safdie’s vision for this uniquely inspiring story, while Nala Sinephro’s score provides an added layer of emotional urgency.
