Christopher Nolan on Why It’s ‘Terrific’ for ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie’ to Be Hitting Theaters on the Same Day

Christopher Nolan, like anyone with a genuine love for the art form, believes it’s “terrific” to have his Oppenheimer opening on the same weekend as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

Speaking with IGN, the director and writer of the IMAX-shot thriller pointed out how such a stacked weekend at the theater is good for all filmmakers, not to mention the industry as a whole.

"Summer, in a healthy marketplace, is always crowded, and we've been doing this a long time,” Nolan said. “I think for those of us who care about movies, we've been really waiting to have a crowded marketplace again, and now it's here and that's terrific."

In the months leading up to their July 21 release, the two films have converged into a series of consistently incredible Barbenheimer memes. Some, however, have chosen instead to foolishly focus on pitting the two films against each other. As Nolan and other filmmakers have now made clear, that approach is a silly and limiting way to look at the inherent magic of moviegoing.

In fact, this month has been a particularly generous one for those of us who cherish the communal power of the in-person theatrical experience. This week, for example, Tom Cruise's excellent Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One debuted to glowing reviews and is expected to earn our preeminent champion of movie theaters another massive opening weekend.

All that to say, get your tickets for all three films if you haven't done so already.
