Bryan Cranston, in a sense, can relate to a key plot point in the recently released Malcolm in the Middle revival Life’s Still Unfair.
In a conversation with Complex, the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor recalled finding out that he has a half-sister, with the mid-interview recollection spurred by a question about Malcolm, played by Frankie Muniz, initially hiding the existence of his daughter from parents Lois (played by Jane Kaczmarek) and Hal (played by Cranston).
“That’s happened in my life,” Cranston explained, as seen below. “Oh yeah. I have a half-sister that I didn’t know about for over 50 years, and then I just discovered it about six years ago.”
Cranston added that the woman in question had taken a DNA test, thus revealing the connection. He also looked back on a memory of him and his brother having been taken by their father to visit “his girlfriend” during Christmas, which confused him at the time.
“I was like seven or something. I was wondering, what are we doing here?” he recalled.
Given this experience, Cranston noted, the Malcolm character’s decision to attempt hiding his child from his parents is “not surprising” to him at all.
“We met up with her. She lives in Las Vegas,” he added when asked whether he and his belatedly revealed half-sister ever had the chance to connect in person. “It’s a really strange thing, the not knowing for over 50 years and then all of a sudden, oh.”
The full Complex interview with Cranston and company launches later today (April 17). Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is available on Hulu now.
As fans may recall, this isn’t the first family history surprise Cranston has been met with in his life. Previously, he discovered he had a half-aunt.
