A new American Pie movie is being developed and written by Insecure alum Sujata Day.

Thursday, the Hollywood Reporter said a new entry in the franchise was now “in the works” from Day, whose directorial debut Definition Please was released back in 2020. Additional information has not been made public, aside from THR’s description of the Universal 1440 Entertainment project as being centered on a “fresh take” for the franchise.

Complex has reached out to Universal for comment. Following the news, Day said on Instagram she was “so excited” for the opportunity and pinpointed American Pie as one of her all-time personal favorites of the “raunchy comedies” variety.

The most recent entry in the main American Pie franchise arrived a decade ago with American Reunion, which brought the original ensemble back together by way of a high school reunion-focused setup. In 2019, cast members from the original American Piestaged a real-life reunion on Entertainment Tonight to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the blink-182-featuring comedy.

“It’s definitely wild that people that were born after we made it are now enjoying it,” Eddie Kaye Thomas, who played Paul Finch in the original franchise, said at the time. “I did not think that would happen.”

It’s not currently clear whether any original cast members will be involved with the newly announced American Pie cinematic universe expander, though further updates should be arriving soon. In the meantime, Sujata Day’s Definition Pleaseis now available on Netflix.
