'A Star Is Born' Becomes Highest Grossing Musician-Starring Film Ever

Last year's A Star Is Born, the latest take on the original 1937 film of the same name, is now the highest grossing musician-starring movie in global box office history.

Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, starring Lady Gaga, recently got an Oscar nominations boost that will likely help it continue stacking up box office dollars. For now, though, here's where it stands: As Uproxxspotted by way of some Box Office Mojostats Tuesday morning, A Star Is Born is currently sitting on just under $414 million worldwide. Previous distinction holder The Bodyguard, Mick Jackson's 1992 smash hit starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, is at roughly $411 million. These stats, of course, do not reflect inflation.

Cooper's Star is up for multiple potential honors at next month's Oscars ceremony including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Picture. The film's central musical moment "Shallow," co-penned by Mark Ronson, is also up for the Best Original Song award against Kendrick Lamar and SZA's Black Panther cut "All the Stars." Cooper and Gaga recently surprised fans in Vegas with a live run-through of the song, which is most prominently featured in the film during a scene at the iconic Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

In a December 2018 chat with Goldderby, Ronson compared the sessions that would eventually result in "Shallow" to his previous songwriting work with Gaga. "We had a bit of a bond at that point from working on Joanne, so I could help her finish certain sentences," he said. "But the main thing is she’s driving the ship. You're just there to give some moral support, throw a word at her every now and then."
